Hosta
You can grow a Hosta just about anywhere. While they thrive on a little sunlight, they're also very tolerant of the shade. Their bold leaves – grey-green, striped with white or gold – are the prettiest part of the plant, although the tall flower stems appearing in summer add interest too. They require very little care – just pay attention to them in spring with some organic fertilizer.

Camellia
Camellias have glossy green leaves and gorgeous white, pink or red flowers. While they aren't usually thought of as low maintenance plants, once grown they will perform well for years.

Camellias make great foundation plants where they can be shaded or protected by large trees. Too much sun will scald the leaves, also be sure to plant them in well-drained soil.

Bird of paradise
Don't be put off by its extravagant name, the Bird of Paradise – or Strelitzia Reginae – is relatively easy to grow and low maintenance. Strelitzia has spoon-shaped, grey-green leaves and magnificent, orange and blue flowers, which look stunning when picked and placed in a simple vase. Water them weekly until the soil is completely moist, and use a liquid fertilizer monthly.

Geranium
Slug resistant and easy to care for, Geraniums flower in a range of vibrant colours, brightening up the dullest of gardens. Ideal in pots, beds or rock gardens, they have a neat spreading habit and will reward you with a long flowering season. To refresh your collection just cut off dead flower heads and you'll see new growth quickly.

Primrose
A spring wildflower that comes in a variety of colours, primroses are great for planting in pretty pots and containers and sitting on a windowsill. Grow them in full sun to partial shade. They will thrive in a variety of soils and need little maintenance, but look adorable.

Aloe
Aloe is more than just an ingredient in your hand lotion, it also makes a great plant, indoors or outdoors. Position it in a sunny spot and grow in well-drained soil. Then find a home for it indoors come winter – the less you water this one, the more it thrives. The gooey centre in the stalks is renounced for its healing properties for burns.

Lavender
Grow this delicate flower indoors or out. Lavender brightens up a garden or bedroom with its vibrant shade of purple and lingering scent. Lavender plants will tolerate many growing conditions, but tend to thrive in warm, well-drained soil and full sun.
